The Controller serves as the organization’s senior accounting officer, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, overseeing accounting operations, and maintaining compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and federal/state regulations. The Controller provides strategic support to the CFO, supervises the Assistant Controller and Senior Accountant, and partners across the organization to strengthen financial systems, internal controls, and operational efficiency. Qualifications

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to JFS’ mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker and team-player who will own the responsibility for the financials of the organization.
  • Minimum of a BA in Accounting; MBA and/or CPA preferred but not required.
  • 5 years of increasingly responsible management experience, a portion of which includes oversight and development of staff.
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining the team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly.
  • A track record in grants management, as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants.
  • Keen analytical and problem-solving skills which allow for strategic data interpretation vs. simple reporting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board and/or outside partners.   Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a focus on attention to detail.
  • An independent strategic thinker with good judgment, sensitivity and common sense.
  • Technology savvy with advanced knowledge and/or the ability to rapidly learn accounting and reporting software; exceptional Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) skills.
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance staff.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work with a multicultural customer population; ability to work in a non-judgmental manner and foster positive professional outcomes; able to work as part of a team and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) prior to beginning employment.

 Responsibilities/Essential Functions: 

  • Oversee preparation of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory reporting requirements, including IRS Form 990, state charitable filings, and grant reporting.
  • Partner with Development and Program teams to ensure donor restrictions and grant funds are properly recorded, monitored, and reported.
  • Supervise and provide direction to the Assistant Controller and accounting staff, ensuring high-quality execution of general ledger, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and cash management.
  • Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, including reconciliations and variance analysis.
  • Oversee maintenance of chart of accounts and financial system integrity; identify opportunities to streamline processes and leverage technology (ERP, grant management systems, etc.).
  • Design, implement, and monitor internal control policies to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting best practices.
  • Lead annual audit and serve as primary liaison with external auditors, including preparation of audit schedules and responses.
  • Monitor compliance with restricted fund usage, grant agreements, and debt covenants (if applicable).
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the Assistant Controller and other finance staff, fostering professional growth and a culture of accountability.
  • Partner cross-functionally with HR, IT, Facilities, and Program leaders to integrate financial considerations into organizational decision-making.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CFO, leadership team, and Board Finance/Audit Committees
  • Other duties as assigned.
